SMEG Fridge Philosophy
The trademark, “Tecnologia che arreda,” literally means “Technology with style,” which is the SMEG Fridge Philosophy. SMEG is an Italian company most notably specializing in retro refrigerators. Their philosophy focuses on an overall combination of design and technology used in their products. They strive to design their products simply and understated to keep them refined in any era. Architects, industrial designers, and engineers contribute to the production and construction of their products. SMEG testifies that they only use high-quality steel and materials that they test in research laboratories, to ensure their products last a long time. SMEG uses laser-cutting techniques after carefully selecting the steel to be used in their products. These qualifications make their refrigerators both durable and stylistic.
SMEG showrooms and retailers are located all over the world. Their showroom location in New York City offers late-night hours on the third Thursday of each month. Their headquarters reside in Guastalla, Reggio Emilia in the Emilia Romagna region. Stressing that their products are “made in Italy,” with the finest attention to detail, SMEG keeps true to their promise, as the company has been privately-owned and operated by the Bertazzoni family since it was founded in 1948.
Aesthetically, SMEG’s FAB range of refrigerators offers a 1950’s style with curved corners. These refrigerators come in ten bright colors, including lime green, pastel blue, striped, and even a “Union Jack,” (or the British Union flag) version. The refrigerators are equipped with ice compartments and a choice of left or right horizontal hinge-like door handles. An ice-cube tray comes with the freezer, and there is an interior light. These refrigerators weigh approximately 181 pounds and are energy-efficient.
Keeping with SMEG’s philosophy, these refrigerators combine a unique style with state-of-the-art technology. They offer innovative design by reproducing the kitchen highlights of a bygone era with simple, elegant design but updated with a modern, advanced production. These refrigerators, although vintage looking, have all the amenities of a standard refrigerator. The door contains ten bins to store eggs and condiments. The antibacterial interior contains five shelves, a fruit and vegetable container and a dairy box.
SMEG uses their “Technology with Style” Fridge philosophy to make a point. The philosophy is simple, just like their products, but is carefully calculated to express their goal. Fusing two essential elements, technology, and design that they deem important, they are showing that compromise and cooperation are also part of their integrity.
